Project Description
Pumas of Patagonia Photo Tour
Janine and Guts have returned from Patagonia where they have been scoping out the perfect Patagonia Photo Tour itinerary for March 2026. During their recce trip they had some incredible encounters with pumas as well as taking time to capture some of the most stunning landscapes that this part of the world has to offer.
This small group trip (maximum 5 guests) will visit some of the most iconic parks and wildlife areas in the company of our hand picked local guides whose knowledge and expertise will prove invaluable in our quest to see and photograph these elusive cats. As you will see from the video below Guts and Janine had some incredible encounters and got some stunning images and we hope to replicate this experience for you.
Depending on when your flight arrives in Punta Arenas for our Pumas of Patagonia Photo Tour we will arrange for you to be met and collected from the airport and then brought straight to The Hotel Cabo de Hornos where you will meet up with Janine and your fellow adventurers!
The hotel is very modern with everything you could need for an overnight stay and Janine will host a dinner on the first night to brief you on some final details. If you would like to arrive a day or two before to explore the city then we can certainly arrange that for you.
We have limited the group to a maximum of 5 guests plus Janine for several logistical reasons but also to maximise the attention that she can afford each guest during this Pumas of Patagonia photo tour.
Along with Janine, we will also have our trusted ground handler (an excellent South American photo guide) who will be accompanying the group throughout. He will be responsible for coordinating the wildlife activities and maximising our photo opportunities.
The next morning we will head off towards the Torres del Paine National Park stopping along the way for lunch at a location to see if we can spot and photograph some Condors. The drive itself is beautiful and plenty of sightings to be had along the road such as armadillos and skunks.
There is an option to fly to Peurto Natales which is closer to our destination but Guts and Janine found the road trip far more fun and an opportunity to take in some of the scenery….as well as the flights being hellishly expensive!
The group will arrive at Hosteria Pehoe on Lake Pehoe in the afternoon. Janine reports that this is one of the most scenic hotel locations she has ever experienced in her extensive travels. The hotel is situated on a small island in the lake where you can cross a bridge with the Torres Del Paine National Park as your backdrop. The hotel is basic but comfortable but the views more than make up for it!
On day three it’s time to dust off your wider lenses and spend the day taking in the magnificent landscapes of Torres del Paine National Park. As you can see from the video, Guts and Janine made it almost impossible to take a bad landscape photograph with this as your subject.
This will be a full day in the national park and along with landscapes there will be some other wildlife to photograph…especially the prolific bird life of Patagonia.
On the morning of Day Four, we head towards the Hotel Estancia el Ovejero, which is close to a large private farm with three borders shared with the Torres del Paine National Park. As with private concessions in Botswana being on land that is managed privately, gives us more scope and freedom to get better wildlife photographs…especially of the pumas.
Our Pumas of Patagonia Photo Tour has been thoroughly thought through and designed by Guts and Janine with the guidance of Naun to make this a photo tour designed by photographers for photographers.
Each day you will head out in two 4x4s into the farm in search of the pumas that have been spotted and tracked by our dedicated specialist field guide and tracker. When a puma is spotted we can leave the vehicle and approach on foot. the vehicles cant leave the road so if the conditions allow we will approach the pumas on foot away from the vehicles. The pumas are very habituated and ignore the presence of photographers allowing you plenty of time to get the shots you crave.
We can do two activities daily (morning and afternoon) for 3 hours each as per the rules and this will be plenty of time to locate and photograph the pumas and the other wildlife on the farm.
During the day we will head back for a lunch and some time to dopwnload the images from the morning. the days are relatively short at this time of year so there will be around an hour after lunch to relax and have a look through your images before heading out for the afternoon session.
It should be noted that although most of the ground is covered in vehicles there is a fair amount of walking involved on uneven ground. We would strongly suggest that if you are considering joining this Patagonia Photo Tour you have a reasonable level of fitness and mobility to make the most of it.
In the evenings there will be time to relax and enjoy a hearty dinner with your fellow adventurers before retiring to bed.
We have included five full days of Puma tracking in the photo tour itinerary which will give you more than enough opportunities to see and photograph plenty of pumas and their behaviour.
We have chosen March for this Patagonia Photography Workshop so as to increase the chances of seeing and photographing young pumas. It is also not a very busy time of year so there are less crowds. Of course, this is very much down to luck but if we do come across a mother and cubs then they will be at their most endearing stage of their young lives.
On the final day, we will head back to Punta Arenas, by road, with a stop off for lunch in Puerto Natales and if you have a connecting evening flight we can arrange a transfer straight to the airport. If you would like us to arrange an extra night or two at the end of the Patagonia photo tour then we will be happy to do so for you.
